Strategy
Local Industrial Strategy Consultation
We were commissioned to design seven facilitated workshops to gather feedback to inform the Local Industrial Strategy (LIS). We began by analysing the draft LIS and agreeing the topics and target audience for each workshop. We created a series of discussion topics for each workshop to guide the discussion. These included:
"How we boost productivity across all sectors including those typified by lower wages and seasonal work?"
"How can we best minimise the impact of climate change through adaptation and invest in infrastructure that enhances resilience?"
We then designed a detailed workshop guide for each event incorporating a series of facilitated exercises. Each workshop was structured as follows:
• Introduction to topic
• Validation and success measures
• Identifying and ranking opportunities and challenges
• Major interventions for top ranking opportunities and challenges
174 stakeholders attended the events and we wrote up key findings from each session, along with an overall report and a lessons-learned log. We found that there was strong support amongst stakeholders for the LEP's focus on inclusive growth and action on climate change, alongside business productivity.
The LEP issued surveys to participants following the workshops and key findings included:
• 60% of participants said the workshops were highly effective at gathering their insights and opinions, with the remaining 40% said they were effective in this respect; and,
• 100% of respondents said that it was clear how their contribution would be used to inform the Local Industrial Strategy

Development of business strategy
We developed the strategy over three phases:
i) Where are we now?
We reviewed Bradnet’s financial performance in detail identifying services that generated a profit, and those that ran at a loss. We interviewed members of staff, completed SWOT analysis and identified key trends in the funding landscape and the changing requirements of service users.
ii) Where do we want to get to?
We delivered a facilitated workshop for senior Bradnet staff and Trustees, and reviewing the Charity’s vision, mission and overall aim. We developed a long-list of organisational objectives were developed using the SWOT-TOWS approach. Objectives were shortlisted in the workshop using a facilitated workshop exercise.
iii) How do we get there?
Detailed Action Plans were developed in partnership with Bradnet’s staff and Trustees for each of the four short-listed options. We supported the Senior Leadership Team over a 12 month period as they implemented priority actions.

Business growth and innovation ecosystem
We completed detailed research on best practice ecosystems across the world including the North West part of the state of Pennsylvania, USA which specialised in innovation support. We designed a mapping template and issued it to business support providers across the North East to gather data on existing provision.
We researched the North East's economic strengths and weaknesses and presented a series of strategic priorities for the LEP and partners to consider. We designed and delivered facilitated workshops with stakeholders to gather their feedback on current and future provision and priorities.
We identified 5 major programmes that could be developed to address the North East’s economic challenges and opportunities. They are presented in our visual ecosystem model representing how the North East ecosystem could be structured.
